Mochiuji was born alongside his twin sister, Machiara, in Kugane. Their mother was at the time a courtesan and hailed for her grace and beauty, and their father was a trained Samurai who served the Sekiseigumi and strove to keep Kugane safe. The two met at as young adults, and many of their peers will say it was love at first sight. They were quick to settle down together, and their mother opened a small tea shop to run while the twins grew up.Growing up, the twins found that their interests were not what their parents expected. While his sister trained hard to join the Sekiseigumi forces, Mochiuji instead found that his passion sat with his skill in charisma and empathy. His natural good looks and gentle personality earned him an easy spot among the Courtesans of Kugane.However, Mochiuji wanted to try and travel. To offer his services to people in need who couldn't make it to Kugane for whatever reason. For this, he paid his way onto a small trade ship, and sailed to Doma. On his way, however, he met a young sailor named Hyaru. They grew close very quickly on their travels - but Mochi never could have guessed where this would lead him.Upon reaching Doma, the sailors that offered him passage turned their true colors. A raid was staged on a small village on the shore. Mochiuji made an attempt to escape the chaos, but he was stopped by Hyaru. To keep him from turning them in to the officials, Mochi was kept on the ship as a prisoner rather than a passenger.For months, he was abused by not just Hyaru, but the rest of the crew as well, as they made their route through Doma and eventually back to Kugane. When they pulled their ship to the docks, Mochiuji waited until nightfall, and finally made an attempt to escape. He managed to find his way to one of the nightlife streets of Kugane, apprehended by Hyaru and two others. Here, he ran into a woman outside of a small hostel, who ushered him inside when she realized that he was fleeing from someone.The woman, a Hyur by name of Kuriko, kept Mochi hidden in a back room while offering false directions to Hyaru and the others. And only when they had left did she speak to the terrified and malnourished Mochiuji, who recounted his story of his suffering by their hand. Hearing this, Kuriko (and some of her eavesdropping employees) promised to keep him safe, while they went to the authorities to report the incident.Before any arrests could be made, the sailors fled Kugane. It is unknown where they are. Mochiuji, now free from their abuse, made his way home to see his parents and sister. He spent much time in recovery, until he eventually found his way back to Kuriko's hostel. Eventually, they hired him into their fold as a caretaker. Here, Mochiuji resumes his duties as a host and enjoys spending time with his clients.A few months into his work at Kuriko's Hostel, Mochi had a choice encounter with a young Viera woman by the name of Lantana. Their connection was almost immediate, she was a kind soul, and adventurous to boot. Mochi found himself drawn to her slightly chaotic nature, and it wasn't long before the two of them formed a special bond. Lantana was beautiful, and clever. How could he not find himself drawn to her?For a small amount of time, Lantana worked briefly for the Hostel - but regularly lamented the idea of being stuck in Kugane forever. She wanted to wander, to see the world and all it had to offer. So, Mochiuji referred her to a traveling group of dancers, who rumor said were planning on traveling to the West. Lantana jumped at the chance, and left with the promise that no matter where life took them, they would always have room for each other in their hearts.
